Our Mission and Vision
Committed to Enhancing Health and Wellbeing
The EMMrGNSi team is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of first responders through rigorous research and community collaboration. Our goal is to work together with our local first responder advocacy group and policy makers to engage meaningfully with first responder participants and develop a series of participant-driven studies, along with constructive knowledge mobilization programs that will adequately uncover answers to the concerns this group has regarding their health. Our studies focus on critical areas such as mental health, gut health, nutrition, and sleep issues. We aim to recruit first responders for our studies, ensuring their voices shape the research that affects their health and well-being.
The EMMrGNSi Team
The EMMrGNSi team was established as a culmination of efforts by local firefighters in Western Canada seeking assistance to answer urgent questions regarding evidence-based changes that can be made to improve their health, in collaboration with expert researchers and clinicians from across North America. The team is led by Dr Heather Armstrong who is an associate professor with the Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology, University of Alberta, and Andrew Martin who is a firefighter paramedic and chair of the Alberta Professional Fire Fighters & Paramedics Association Health & Wellness Committee. The study is coordinated by team manager Jonathan Janveaux with the Department of Medicine, University of Alberta.
The advocacy team includes health and wellness coordinators for provincial firefighter, police, and emergency medical services. The team is further supported by local first responders representing active-duty members and health and wellness committees provincially. Advocates assist in study design, recruitment, and communicating findings, along with planning meetings with key policy makers regarding design of next step studies and promotion of workplace modifications.
Our social media posts and the pamphlets designed for first responder engagement were produced by our two brilliant communications students (Tayla Hamilton and Taemin Kim) who offer professional design services:
